چکیده

[1] We present new data on genotypic differences and biogeographic distribution of coiling types in the living planktonic foraminiferal morphospecies Neogloboquadrina pachyderma. The genetic evidence demonstrates that coiling direction in N. pachyderma is a genetic trait, heritable through time, and is not a morphological feature reflecting ecophenotypic variation. The two opposite coiling morphotypes appear to have diverged during the late Miocene, and they have distinctly different ecologies. In combination with fossil evidence, biogeography, and ecology the degree of genetic distinction between the two coiling types of N. pachyderma strongly implies that they should be considered different species. We propose the adoption of the widely recognized name N. incompta for the right coiling morphospecies. The genetic evidence also demonstrates a low level (<3%) of aberrant coiling associated with both morphotypes. The abundance of these aberrant specimens has no relationship with the environment. These findings have important consequences for the use of N. pachyderma and N. incompta as paleoceanographic signal carriers in polar and subpolar waters.

Calibration and application of B/Ca, Cd/Ca, and dB in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral) to constrain CO2 uptake in the subpolar North Atlantic during the last deglaciation

[1] The North Atlantic and Norwegian Sea are prominent sinks of atmospheric CO2 today, but their roles in the past remain poorly constrained. In this study, we attempt to use B/Ca and dB ratios in the planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral variety) to reconstruct subsurface water pH and pCO2 changes in the polar North Atlantic during the last deglaciation. Comparison of ...

Timing of Shell Size Increase and Decrease of the Planktic Foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (Sinistral) During the Pleistocene, IODP Exp. 303 Site U1304, the North Atlantic Ocean

We made shell size measurements of the planktic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral) using samples from IODP Site U1304, the North Atlantic. We found that mean and maximum shell sizes began to increase around 1.1 Ma, and that several episodic changes in test size occurred during 0.6 – 0.35 Ma. Test size reached a maximum during the late Quaternary. Based on correlation with previ...

Calcium isotopic composition of high-latitude proxy carrier Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.)

The accurate reconstruction of sea surface temperature (SST) history in climate-sensitive regions (e.g. tropical and polar oceans) became a challenging task in palaeoceanographic research. Biogenic shell carbonate SST proxies successfully developed for tropical regions often fail in cool water environments. Their major regional shortcomings and the cryptic diversity now found within the major h...

Deep-dwelling planktonic foraminifera of the northeastern Pacific Ocean reveal environmental control of oxygen and carbon isotopic disequilibria

-We assess the utility of four species of living planktonic foraminifera as tracers of thermocline and intermediate water masses in the northern Pacific Ocean, based on their water-column distribution and shell isotopic composition. Assuming oxygen isotopic equilibria with the water column, we infer apparent calcification depths. This allows an estimate of apparent carbon isotopic disequilibria...
